Helping Your Child Recover from Sexual Abuse

From a parent point of view I ask the question of how you help your child heal from sexual abuse. I have chosen this because I am a parent that is going through trying to help my child heal from her abuse. As I research the Ashford library, Pro Quest, Goggle, and information from the Women’s Center of Houston. I have found that parents play an important role in helping our children recover from sexual abuse. Just as helping those with school work, trying to tie their shoes, picking out their clothes for the day, or even helping them be successful in the future. It’s our duty as parents to give them support, belief, and protection when they have been through a shocking experience. How do you help your child heal from sexual abuse? Caren Adams and Jennifer Fay, University of Washington Press, 1987, ask the same question. Put yourself in parent’s shoes that are going or has been through what we fear each and everyday. Can you wonder how it feel if your child comes to you and says â€Å"it has happen to me†? What do you do after the shocking news? The nightmare of coping with the sexual abuse of your child begins. Will your child get over it? Will your child grow up to be an offender? What do you do in the days to come? Will this affect your child’s life? Parents of child victims are all over the world are asking this question right now. Hundreds of children are being sexual abuse every year. America reports that every 1 in 4 girls will be sexually abused by thee age of 18, and 1 out of 8 boys will be also. There are many different types of abuse that can occur, but the single most traumatizing type is sexual abuse. Sexual abuse is unwanted sexual activity forced on a person by another through coercion or threats. Now no one wants their child to go through a traumatic experience growing up. So when something like this happens to your child the question still stands. How do you help your child heal from sexual abuse? This question may be hard to answer if you never been in this situation before. I didn’t know how to go about to even find ways on healing for my daughter. Her sexual abuse happen when she was 14 year old. I’ve called several hotlines to speak to social workers, of the Child Assessment Center. I just need the first step in talking to someone about my situation in getting some help for my daughter. The social worker was kind enough to tell me that she might need to go to counseling before it gets too late in the future. Counseling for children and teens that has been sexual abuse is good this will help your child to be able to talk about the abuse that he or she has experienced. It really starts from the beginning, when the first thing you need to do is separate your natural reaction to the horrible news from the disbelief of your child. Feeling of disbelief is called denial, and most of the time they wish that all of this is a bad dream. Children hide their feeling from parents and other people around them. Our role is to support our child/children in recovery through reassurance, safety, and love. A parent of a victim of sexual abuse told me that in order to heal from the pain and hurt. â€Å"We need to find a position of recover first†. From that note I realize that it take parents to be able to heal themselves as well, so that they can help their children heal. We must tell our child/children that we believe them, we love them, I’m sorry that this happen to you, It wasn’t your fault; I will be there to take care of you. The subject on helping your child heal from sexual abuse is important because our children are our future. There is life after the abuse. The victims can become what ever they desire to be in the future and put the hurt in the past. This will allow the healing to take over the world and be successful adults.

Literature Essay: One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by K Kesey

It is suggested that Ken Kesey†s One Flew over the Cuckoo†s Nest contains examples of behaviour and attitudes displayed by characters within the clinical environment of the psychiatric ward which can be compared to behaviour found within contemporary American society. These include examples of leadership and hierarchy within a class or caste system, sexism and crime and punishment. In the text, the theme of leadership is very prominent and important to the story. Arguably it is more important theme of the book, than the issue of mental illness, which forms the setting and the core of the novel. The leader figure in the ward is Big Nurse, who has complete control over the ward. Any decisions that are made over a patient or with regards the running of the ward must go through Big Nurse first. She is seen by the Chief as being almost mechanical in her approach to her running of the ward: She†s got that bag full of a thousand parts she aims to use in her duties today-wheels and gears, cogs polished to a hard glitter†¦(10) The ward is run by her to a very strict daily routine, which is almost fanatically neurotic in it†s precision and dedication. Chief describes Big Nurse†s devotion to her daily routine: ‘The slightest thing messy or out of kilter in any way ties her into a little white knot of tight-smiled fury† (27) When McMurphy enters the ward, the delicate equilibrium which the nurse has created is upset. This is because, like the nurse, McMurphy is a natural leader-figure. He takes over the control of the ward by manipulating the patients; seemingly for their own good, but it may be argued that he gets a feeling a control from being a leader over a large group of people. This may be a feeling of control and power which has previously been absent in his life for some reason. We are told, early in the book, of McMurphy†s admission to the ward doctor about his conviction for raping a fifteen year old girl, and his unwillingness to acknowledge that he had committed a crime: ‘Said she was seventeen, Doc, and she was plenty willin†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ so willin†, in fact, I took to sowing my pants up† (40) This could also be argued for Big Nurse; What is her motive for her total dedication to the job? It is possible that she also relishes the feeling of control over the patients in her care which her job allows. She knows that she has absolute power over every patient in her ‘care†; The power to change any of her patient†s lives immediately wherever she might see fit. Such behaviour can also be seen in contemporary society in an environment such as a school; The school is a good example because it has a central leader in the position of the head teacher. The head teacher has full responsibility over every person within the school, and also sets the rules and regulations which everyone in that particular school must obey. If a member of the school breaks any of the rules, the head teacher will decide an appropriate punishment. While the head teacher is answerable to the Governing Board of the school, they still have the most ‘power† and authority over the school. It can also be shown within a large corporation with the position of a Managing Director. All other staff in the company are directly answerable to him. The Managing Director has the power to hire new staff, and also to make staff redundant. But, again, he is answerable to the owner of the company and perhaps the shareholders; so he can never have total power in his position This can be contrasted with Big Nurse; She is, in theory, answerable to the Management Board of the hospital, and even to the doctors who work on the ward. But she appears to have the most control over the daily running of the ward, as if she were senior to the doctors, even though, in fact, she is only a nurse. She seems to have total and complete authority over every person in the ward. The theme of leadership does not mirror the outside world very accurately, as in contemporary society a leader of a society or an organisation is almost always accountable to a person senior to him. This is not seen in the novel, as Big Nurse seems to be answerable to no one, in fact, it is arguable that everyone answers to her. A hierarchy or class system operates inside the ward which can be clearly seen throughout the course of the novel. Patients living within the ward are ‘classed† according to the state of their mental health or to the condition of which they suffer from. Chief describes the method of discriminating patients from one another: ‘Across the room from the Acutes are the Chronics†¦ Not in the hospital, these, to get fixed, but to keep them walking the streets†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (17) Patients are divided into two categories of Acutes & Chronics: Chronics are those patients who have a condition which is untreatable, â€Å"machines with flaws which cannot be repaired† (17) and can only be controlled with medical methods. They will spend the rest of their lives inside the ward of the hospital. Patients who are seen as being likely to recover from their illness, and will return to society. Acutes are those patients e.g. Harding, who are seen as being likely to recover from their illness, and will return to society. Chronics can either have full use of their bodies or can be again sub-categorised into Wheelers and Vegetables; Those whose movement is impaired to such an extent, they can only move by being pushed around in wheelchairs. Vegetables are patients who, through excessive ECT ‘Shock Shop† (18) or through the overperscription of tranquillising medications: ‘Ellis is a chronic came in an Acute and got fouled up bad when they overloaded him in the Shock Shop†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (18) When McMurphy enters the ward, he assumes the role of a leader over all of his fellow patients in the ward. McMurphy has a strong, intelligent character and so he is able to manipulate others who are more vulnerable than he is. An example of his manipulation is when he shows some playing cards with pornographic photographs on them to Cheswick: ‘I brought along my own deck†¦Fifty-two positions†. Cheswick is pop-eyed already†¦those cards don†t help his condition. (16) Personality types which can be seen in contemporary society can also be seen very clearly with regard to the characters in the ward setting: McMurphy†s character is a rebel character who hates authority and authoritative figures. This is, perhaps, why he clashes so fiercely with Big Nurse. Chief is the veteran of the ward. He has been there the longest, since the start of World War II, with the exception of Big Nurse. He has the mutual respect of everyone in the ward. Billy Bibbit is insecure and has a stutter. His name is ironic in that it resembles a stutter when said. His problems have probably been caused by his overbearing mother, who was very protective and spoke for him whenever possible. In a large group of individuals, these personalities are often seen; A rebel character who goes against the system is almost always present in a class inside a school; A veteran who has gained the respect of everyone in that particular grouping; A person who is lacking in confidence, often reluctant to speak out. Today, in contemporary society, a class system is still very much a part of everyday life. People are classed on wealth, status and employment. Discrimination can also exist between classes; lower classes finding higher classes snobbish and elitist; higher classes perhaps seeing lower classes as ‘common† and uneducated. The book mirrors hierarchy in contemporary society very well, as it shows different personality types and differentiates between the different classes of people within it very clearly and accurately. However, it does not show discrimination between the different classes which exists today in contemporary society and is quite important to the structure of modern societies. The issues of Sexism and Sexuality are also raised within the book. Although they do not feature so prominently as the themes of Leadership and Hierarchy, they are nevertheless very important to the behaviour of the characters. Taking the theme of sexism in the text, women are placed into two distinct stereotypical types. They are portrayed as either whores, sluts or nymphomaniac wives; or the book goes to the other extreme where women are held as asexual ‘machines†. This view is very important when referring to Big Nurse. The prostitutes that appear during McMurphy†s fishing trip are a good example of the first way the book describes women. They are shown as amoral, trivialising sex so that it is seen only as a meaningless business transaction. It is also made clear of the loss of McMurphy†s at the age of nine: ‘The first girl ever drug me to bed wore that same dress. I was about ten†¦Taught me how to love, bless her sweet ass (201)† Ruckly†s wife is another example of this such view of women as adulteresses. Ruckly has had an unsuccessful lobotomy, making him rather mentally unstable. The text portrays him very sympathetically, so the reader empathises with his character from the outset: ‘They brought him back to the ward two weeks later†¦you can see by his eyes how they burned him up in there† (18) Ruckly had found out that his wife had been seeing other men; Every time she is mentioned he remembers what she did to him: ‘Memory whispers someplace in that jumbled machinery†¦He turns red and veins clog up†¦Fffffffuck da wife! Ffffffuck da wife!† (19) This is not the only unfavourable way women are portrayed in the novel. Big Nurse is shown as a hardened and rather sterile asexual character. ‘ ‘A mistake was made in manufacturing, putting those big, womanly breasts on her†¦and you can she how bitter she is for it† (11) Whenever she is described by Chief, her attributes are likened to a piece of machinery which is cold and unfeeling. It appears that she is so dedicated to the ward that she is ‘married† to the job and sexual relationships have no place in her ‘plan†. It is arguable that this is why she becomes so enraged when she discovers McMurphy†s relations with the prostitutes towards the end of the book. Today, in contemporary society, the view sometimes is still held that women inferior to men. They can be seen as incapable of carrying out work, and should stay at home to look after the children. Although the advent of feminism has almost vanquished these ‘male chauvinist† attitudes, women can still be stereotyped as above; as whores or nymphomaniacs or, like Big Nurse; ‘frigid†, asexual and cold. It can be seen, thus, the text of One Flew over the Cuckoo†s Nest shows sexism in contemporary society accurately. Finally, the issues of crime and punishment are raised throughout the book and are very important from the outset and ultimately to the ending of the story. The ward, like the society outside, is run on a system of sanctions and rewards which are allocated according to a patient†s behaviour. Punishments may be issued, by Big Nurse, for unwillingness to co-operate with the daily routine or with the staff. Punishments included ECT , the removal of privileges such as cigarettes or more serious, repeat offenders as a last resort, a lobotomy. A patient could also be sent to Disturbed, in effect a ‘hospital within a hospital† where a patient could be sent to recover from an outburst and they will return to the ward when Big Nurse sees fit. A lobotomy is a surgical procedure in which the pre-frontal lobes of the brain are either removed or destroyed. This was thought to pacify aggressive patients, but in practise, it transformed them into inactive individuals: â€Å"The installations they do these days are usually successful†¦a success they say†¦like Ruckly fumbling and drooling all over his picture† (18-19) Rewards were also issued to by the establishment of the ward; Patients were give a ‘ration† of cigarettes every week, but this was stopped when McMurphy arrived in the ward as he used to win the others† cigarettes from them in gambling card games. It is arguable that the security of the hospital could be seen as a reward. Patients, who through the result of their ‘mental illness † could not cope in the outside world and require the constant daily routine to feel secure and safe. Contemporary society has a system of rules, laws and legislations which must be followed to be a member of that society. Society also has the power, like the ward to issue sanctions for those who break the rules. Although many countries have abolished the use of corporal or capital punishment for serious crimes, North America is one such a country where, depending on the state, a person may face capital punishment by lethal injection, electric chair or gas chamber. The ward applies corporal punishment in the form of the ECT and it may be argued that a lobotomy is a form of capital punishment because the patient has little or no quality of life left after the procedure, so they might as well have been killed. Ken Kesey†s One Flew Over The Cuckoo†s Nest mirrors, in the behaviour of it†s characters, contemporary society very accurately and can still be relied on, as a contemporary text, an accurate display of the treatment of patients within a mental hospital today.

The Descent of Hag The Descent of Hag The Descent of Hag By Mark Nichol The headline of this post uses descent in two senses: This post discusses the etymological origin of hag, but it also points out how the connotation of the term has plummeted in status. The contemporary connotation of hag is â€Å"old woman,† with additional senses of a careless, ugly, or evil appearance; the offensive term â€Å"fag hag† refers to a straight woman who associates with gay men. In the Middle Ages, the term referred to a female demon or an evil spirit, but it was originally associated with highly respected oracles, or soothsayers. Hag is the truncated version of the Old English term hagetes (also spelled hagtesse), meaning â€Å"witch† or â€Å"sorceress.† The second syllable, later misidentified as a mere suffix, was lopped off, but that’s the essential element; it’s probably related to words in other languages referring to demons or spirits, while hag is likely cognate with hedge. The significance of that term is that hedges were considered the boundary between civilization and the wild, and witches- and reclusive women with mysterious healing abilities who were sometimes accused of being witches- straddled both worlds. A term with a loose association, hagridden, refers to sleep paralysis, because of the belief that one’s sense of being immobilized while lying in bed was caused by a spirit bearing down on the sufferer; by extension, the term also means â€Å"tormented,† and the verb hagride means â€Å"torment.† Similarly, the rare adjective hagged originally meant â€Å"bewitched† and later acquired the sense of â€Å"gaunt,† due to the belief that such an appearance was the result of bewitchment. Haggard, originally meaning â€Å"unruly† or â€Å"wild,† is not directly related- it comes from the Old French phrase faulcon hagard (â€Å"wild falcon†)- but it’s a distant relation that acquired the sense of â€Å"worn† by association with hag. Other related words include the archaic noun haw, meaning â€Å"enclosure† (the first syllable of hawthorn), and hex, which originally referred to a witch but later came to apply to a witch’s spell. Gas Prices pre and post 9/11/2001 and Its Effect on U.S. Economy Petrol, or commonly known as gasoline in North America, is a liquid mixture that is obtained from petroleum or can be considered as one of the main products obtained from refining crude oil. Gasoline is mainly made up of aliphatic hydrocarbons and is usually improved through the addition of aromatic hydrocarbons toluene, isooctane or even benzene to further raise its octane ratings. Primarily, gasoline is used as a fuel in internal combustion engines such as in automobiles and light trucks and accounts for almost 17 percent of United States’ energy consumption. Gasoline, or â€Å"gas† as its colloquial term, is also used to fuel recreational vehicles, boats and most of the  equipment  that is used  on  farms and in construction. Though the production of gasoline occurs year-round, there are still extra volumes of gasoline that are made to meet the gasoline requirements during the summer driving seasons. Gasoline has three main grades and these are premium, regul ar, and mid-grade, which is all derived from oil refineries. Several pipelines that are linked to a massive distribution chain are used to serve 168, 987 retail gasoline stations. The three main grades have different octane level, and their prices also vary according to the grade of the gasoline. Though usually, the price differential that is present between the grades is constant. Generally, gas prices have been increasing before the 9/11 incident, and it affects the economy of US and other countries either directly or indirectly through the consumers, especially their buying power. The cost that is included in the production and the transportation of gasoline from the source to the consumers is the cost of crude oil to refiners. Furthermore, the marketing and distribution costs, the refinery processing costs and the retail station costs along with the imposed taxes of that state on gasoline  are also included in the costs of production and manufacture of gasoline. All of these costs are mainly reflected in  the amount that the consumers pay in the gasoline stations. A large component that is included in the retail price of gasoline is the taxes imposed in it, either it may be Federal, State or local. The taxes account for more or less 19 percent of what the consumers pay for  every gallon of gasoline. Almost 18.4 cents per gallon of gasoline is from the Federal tax and more or less 21 cents per gallon of gasoline is due to the State tax. Furthermore, the implementation of eleven States levy added State sales and other taxes and the additional local county and city taxes that is applied on gasoline, imposes a significant effect or impact on the price of gasoline. The difference in the price of gasoline that is observed from one state or town to the other is due to the varying taxes imposed and due to the varied formulations implemented in the different parts of the state, county or region. Only 19 percent of the amount paid by consumers is due to refining costs and profits while only 9 percent of the retail cost paid by consumers per gallon of gasoline is due to marketing, distribution, and retail dealer costs. Gasoline prices normally increase or decrease even if the price of crude oil that is used in the production of gasoline is stable, generally because of factors such as changes in crude oil prices, seasonality in the gasoline supply and demand balance, and unusual events or trends affecting the supply and demand balance. Also, local retail station competition could affect the prices of gasoline. Domestic problems that could disrupt the crude oil supply may include refinery outages and pipeline outages or demand, which includes differences in the specifications set by a particular region, area or season on the product. The effect of unusual events or trends had always influenced the price of gasoline and these includes a weakening economy, an increase  in the production of gasoline from refineries but a decrease in the demand for gasoline for jet fuels and automobiles and the September 11,  2001, terrorist attacks. These factors account for almost, but not greater than, 30 cents pe r gallon of gasoline. September 9, 2001, commonly known as 9/11, includes a series of coordinated terrorist attacks by a nineteen terrorists who were said to be affiliated with the Al-Qaeda, whose also hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners and committed suicide attacks, crashing the each of the planes into four different targets. The World Trade Center in New York City is one of the terrorists’ targets, resulting  in  the collapse of the two buildings. Due to the 9/11 incident, rumors on the increase of the gasoline price had spread onto consumers like a forest fire. Panic buying had occurred, and the demand for gasoline increased. The 9/11 incident does not have any impact on the gas supply, therefore, should not have any impact on the gasoline price and their effects on the economy are not directly connected. Crude oil and gasoline prices constantly increase  before the September 9, 2001  terrorist attacks.  Ã‚  On January 1, 1999, the average retail regular price for crude oil and gasoline was almost 39 dollars per barrel. This price increased up to 40 dollars per barrel then decreased to 36 dollars per barrel in March 1999. But this decrease in the crude oil and gasoline price was not continuous. In May 1999, the crude oil and gasoline prices increased tremendously to 48 dollars per barrel. Since then on, the prices kept increasing and decreasing, then again increasing at a higher price (dollars per barrel) every month in the year 1999 up to July in the year 2000 almost equal to 70 dollars per barrel. By August and September 2000, the prices of crude oil and gasoline decreased greatly up to almost 59 dollars per barrel and increased slightly in October 2000 to 65 dollars per barrel. The prices of crude oil and gasoline no longer increased any higher than this but decreased up to 58.80 dollars per barrel in January and April 2001. The prices of crude oil and gasoline started to increase rapidly by the second week of May 2001. The average retail regular price of crude oil and gasoline was at its peak in the second week of May 2001, with almost 72 dollars per barrel. The price ranged from 70 to 72 dollars per barrel from May up to the end of July 2001. Then it had rapidly decreased up to almost 57 dollars per barrel in August 2001. The decreased in the price of crude oil and gasoline was not continuous. Due to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the prices increased due to panic buying from the consumers. Rumors of a tremendous increase in the crude oil and gasoline prices struck fear among the consumers. The scarcity of gasoline and crude oil supply also added to the consumers’ fear of having to avail gas at an unimaginable price. Lines to gasoline stations in the days after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were really long, where customers had to wait hours just to get gasoline. The sudden increase in the demand for gasoline made gasoline stations and dealers hungry for more profit, led to an increase in the price of gasoline, higher than the price in August 2001. From almost 57 dollars per barrel in August 2001, prices increased to almost 66 dollars per barrel in the second week of September 2001. The prices of gasoline and crude oil continued to be sold at a range of 64 to 66 dollars per barrel up to October 2001 (Burdette, 2001). The prices of crude oil and gasoline because of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were alarming, especially to the regulatory board on the prices of crude oil and gasoline. The government started to place penalties and fines to gasoline stations, dealers, and suppliers who would impose gasoline prices that are above or higher than 2 dollars per gallon. Information dissemination was also done by the government to inform consumers of the actual price of crude oil and gasoline. The supply of crude oil and gasoline was also shown to the consumers in order to avoid further panic buying. The action of stabilizing the price of crude oil and gasoline made by the government resulted in a decrease in the gasoline price back to 58.80 dollars per barrel in October 2001. According to Michael Burdette, a consultant to the Energy Information Administration, â€Å"as of October 29, 2001, the national average retail price of regular gasoline was 1.235 dollars per gallon, its lowest level sinc e November 8, 1999† (2001). Since September 17, the average price of gasoline had already fallen up to 29 cents in just six weeks. In Midwest,   the average retail price of regular gasoline had reached a very sharp decline of 33-cents drop. This drop occurred in the national average in of 10 weeks during the Memorial Day up to the first week of August and it was only interrupted by a brief 17-cent rise in the second week of August. All in all, a decrease of almost 48 cents of the national average retail price of the gasoline was achieved from its peak in May and it is considered to be the widest one-year range in retail prices since 1990, especially considering the time frame of just five months. Economically, the sudden increase in the demand for gasoline had boosted the amount or barrels of gasoline sold in the market within a short period of time. The prices at first seemed to be a burden for consumers, but due to government regulations on the price of gasoline, the burden was lifted. The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks had a large impact, not only in the prices of gasoline but in the economy (especially in the world markets) as a whole. A temporary reduction or decrease in the contract with banks was done by the Federal Reserve whereas, by September 11, the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange, and NASDAQ were all closed and remain as it is until September 17. When the stock market re-opened, the U.S. stocks lost $1.2 trillion in value for the week. The 9/11 incident also has extended effects to other states. Supply of gas fuels ran out in other states the next morning after the terrorist attack. In Iowa, prices were said to reach 4.65 dollars per gallon, in Michigan, it is almost over 5 dollars a gallon. A convenient store under the Casey’s Inc. in Illinois was investigated and would be penalized $50,000 if found guilty of price gouging. The company initiated customer refunds immediately. Another effect of increasing fuel prices is th e reduced productivity growth in the general economy (National Research Council (U.S.), 1988, p.124) The gasoline prices before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks have been observed generally to increase, with some small decrease in gasoline price on months between intervals of an increase. The gasoline price had reached its peak of 72 dollars per barrel in May 2001. The price increase at its highest has been attained even before the 9/11 incident. Before the terrorist attack, the gasoline price had already decreased largely and the price gouging and consumer panics on September 11 and the day after that had increased the gasoline price, but not to a level that is greater than the price of gasoline in May 2001. It can also be noted that after a week or month after the 9/11 incident, gasoline price reached its lowest price of 1.235 dollars per gallon, its lowest price since November 8, 1999. This is due to the strict implementation and immediate action done by the government and regulatory boards on the price of gasoline. The gasoline prices had affected consumers greatly for they are the ones who suffer any price gouging done by dealers or retailers. Economically, gasoline price, after its regulations and stabilization, had increased the buying power of the consumers specifically on gasoline since no additional or reduced prices on other commodities were reported. The huge decrease in the world markets and stocks can be greatly attributed to the 9/11 terrorist attack, but not on the gasoline price. Therefore, any increase or decrease in the price of commodities is not due to gasoline prices but due to the incident. Furthermore, the 9/11 incident should not have had any impact on the gasoline supply.

How to Choose Your Test Date Now that you have an idea of when the ACT offers testing, here are some of the major factors to consider when picking your ACT test date: Know Your Deadlines! The most important thing to remember is to take your ACT before any deadlines. If you apply regular decision, the December test in your senior year will be the last test you can take for most colleges. If you apply early, the last test you can take may be in October or November of your senior year. Additionally, there are scholarship deadlines. If you want to obtain any scholarships that consider your ACT score, you may need to take your ACT before the scholarship application deadline. How Many Times Do You Want to Take the ACT? Most students improve their scores when they retake the ACT, and you should allow yourself an opportunity to take the test multiple times. Generally, we recommend taking the ACT for the first time in the fall of your junior year. Then you can retake it in the spring of your junior year and the fall of your senior year if necessary. How Long Do You Plan to Study? When picking your test date, make sure you have enough time to prepare. Get an idea of how long you’ll need to study and ensure you’ll be able to sufficiently study before you take the test. If you take both the April and June tests without doing any additional preparation in between, your score probably won’t improve much. Do You Have Conflicts With Any Test Dates? Check to see if you have any potential conflicts on or around any of the ACT test dates. Maybe the February date is on the same day as your big wrestling tournament. Persuasive effect Essay How is the writing persuasive? Work through the article commenting on how the choice of words, the style of the writing and the way the information is presented work together to create this persuasive effect. Several techniques are used in the writing to persuade us, to her side of the argument. The first one we meet is the large, bold title of ZOOOOOOH! Tthis is attention grabbing and the linguistic cleverness combines the subject of the article, zoo and the idiotic reactions of the visitors, i. e. Ooooooh. The title has a subtle meaning; it has in it the mindless, moronic reactions of the visitors on seeing the animals, and the graphic design cleverly manipulates our thoughts on the critical comments on zoos. Also there are a line of animal pictures on the bottom of the page, this is to create a sense of realism through illustrations. The sub-heading is in bold as well though it is not as large as the title, this play on words is reflected by the way that she combines her anecdote with an inverted situation, Tess Lemmon watches people watching animals. The effect of that being that it is a play on words with an element of graphic design and it makes us want to read the article and it subtly introduce the idea that she is analysing the reactions of the people, as if in a scientific way. The quotes in bold below the sub-heading are for entertainment, she deliberately takes the most inane comments from the people that she watches and let them argue the case for her, this is called Aunt Sally she has quoted the opposition and has reiterated the quotes for her own needs, the entertainment is in fact a secondary purpose to the real purpose of summing up the attitudes to the animals that the visitors feel in the zoo and shaming them and parodying it. The last quote is the most stupid of them all and has been given its own extra space for its summing up of her views and thoughts on the subject. The first paragraph is devoted nearly entirely to the technique of making short, sharp points, lies on a slab of concrete, stares into space, flicks its tail. People stop, make comments, then go this has the effect of making us think about what the visitors do, because she has summarised what they do in one short paragraph. Exaggeration is also used (which is also called hyperbole), the tiger lies on a slab of concrete, this makes it sounds worse than it is especially as she has generalised the idea of that all the animals lie on a slab of concrete in all zoos while there may be some exceptions, this is bias. This stresses her point of animals in a cell and lying on a slab of concrete without anything to do and living in an unnatural environment, the short sentences also leads us on to the arguments of zoos. She also uses Aunt Sally to a great effect with quoting, a good day out, this makes a point to us of her sarcasm towards the idea of going to the zoo for entertainment and a parodying subject. She uses colloquial language, But hang on a minute running aroundin our backyards, this is used to convey ideas to the reader through an easier way, the effect is, that of an friend having an conversation with you, it is used to put us at ease to seem that she can be trusted, and the language involves everyone, especially using the possessive adjective our and Were this effect in context with colloquial language is that the piece becomes avuncular and inclusive and it invites us to contribute, this makes the writer identify herself with the readers, this encourages the readers to agree with her view and to make us sympathetic to her views. She also uses a rhetorical question, Whatever is in this day and age? to lead on to her arguments, this question makes us feel involved, as it seems as if she cares about our own opinions, it also adds emphasis and stresses the point that we can not allow an animal in a cage, they have the same effect as the use of directives-they make you think that the writer is talking to you personally. The exaggerated tone of the question makes us think about the point of the question and agree with her. This paragraph has a certain amount of sarcasm and Aunt Sally in it, the exaggeration in, the tiger is living it up like nobodys business. Makes the zoo director sound bad, and the section of, saved from having to earn it doesnt even have to walk anywhere. In it one can detect the sarcasm of her writing, on quoting the zoo director. The quote in itself makes the animals sounds quite like prisoners really, with their meals handed to it on a plate, and it doesnt even have to walk anywhere, the effect of that compared with the fact she hints to us about the, zoo directors office is that of the zoos using the animals as exhibits to make themselves rich. Also the tone of, with his tongue only half way in his cheek, brings out the bad habits of the person that she has interviewed the effect of that is to present to us negative opinion of him and also the sentence has a literal meaning as well, of not meaning what you say so that the effect is she doesnt want us to take his views seriously. Also an Aunt Sally was used in describing the zoos as an, Welfare state, this suggests to us that she does not agree with the views of the zoo director and it is an irony that the zoos are described as an, welfare state. Another Aunt Sally is used to great effect in describing her feelings to the reasons trotted out by the zoo whenever their existence is challenged. Also the words in quotations, an ambassador for the wild is there because it reinforces her opinions of zoos and their well-used phrases, as she doesnt believe them. She uses her title of, as an anthropologist This gives credibility to her article and research as we think she would give an unbiased opinion, but in fact this is a trick so that we think she is not biased, but rather using the title, she hides herself and still, gives us the biased opinions under the pretence of being a scientist, having spent hours She repeats herself once more as she says, watching people watching animals, this merely emphasis the point that her subject is on humans and repeating the point in the sub-headings, this is also an anecdote so that we believe in her because she has experience. She then goes on to say her conclusions after giving us her title of an anthropologist and make her sound more reliable, she goes on to say about her opinions of zoos, it is almost a directive/imperative language as she says, no zoo can fulfil no zoo can bring about presents a distorted picture this almost commands us to believe in her research and her conclusion. Also another important is the use of 3 words grouped together, good, bad, best in the world the good, bad, best, bit emphasises the point, it somehow strengthens and stresses the point she is making. Another good persuasive trick used by her is to mingle fact with opinion and make it sound all like fact, in this next paragraph we see her doing just that, many of the main European zoos were founded at the beginning of the last century this is all fact and now she astutely and subtly adds her opinions on that, hand in hand with the spirit of adventure conquest and acquisition it is no coincidence that the zoo as we know it sprang up in the colonial era this makes us understand the real reasons for displaying the animals while it is still only her opinion. This affects us on whether we believe and trust the text, she gives a lot of facts but she has hidden her opinions in the form of fact among the facts, so we would tend to believe her, she uses opinions based on facts while giving facts as examples to illustrate her point. To further the readability of her article, colloquial language is used to simplify the language barrier between the grammatically correct English and her colloquialism so that it is easier to read and to digest the information, these days gawp a rhetorical question is used, so what do the zoos do? this is colloquial language with rhetorical question working at the same time. The answer has sarcasm built in, she hypes what the zoos say they do, serious scientific research total commitment to conservation vital role as educators then she dashes it all to pieces with 2 sharp points, they go to see the animals-and to be entertained. The effect of that is to drag down the zoos lofty ideals so that she can now put her argument to use with the subject now, of why we need zoos, this is divide and conqueror, she uses a linked process of arguments and then one by one she moves on to another stage and to convince us in the end to her beliefs. Ethics of Freezing and Buying Eggs $15,000 baby is a very interesting case to consider for me, I have a lot of personal feelings on this and I am going to try and set aside some of them in order to have a fresh perspective, I do however, see myself being very bias on this topic to begin with so I apologize ahead of time and also you may learn some stuff about me in this paper. As far as the specific benefit of freezing eggs, I do not think this is a benefit health care organizations should consider offering in any way. First, I think it is going to be too costly to provide for females who actually want the procedure done.   Second, I dont think many women will bite on this offer, especially since there is such a low chance of actually conceiving this way. If you look at age alone, and IVF, the rates get lower as they get older as chances of conception anyhow. Looking only at the IVF treatments that used fresh embryos from non-donor eggs, the number of women under the age of 35 who gave birth using IVF was about 40%, compared with only 31% for women between the ages of 35 and 37. Only 3.9% of 42-year-olds got pregnant as a result of IVF treatment. (Christensen, 2014) I think it is a wasted benefit when there are other focuses in this area that could be used as a benefit. I do think that adding in benefits for working moms to stay home longer would be great, or adoption assistance for those who cant get pregnant at all or even IVF for those who struggle to get pregnant. To make this a little personal I will go into a little detail about myself and struggles with infertility. I was married for five years to an Australian guy prior to my current relationship. We had tried four of the five years attempting to get pregnant. It ultimately ended our relationship. After numerous fertility specialist and thousands of dollars we found out it was the combination of the two of us together. So we looked into the next step of having kids, which for us, was IVF. Not only did our insurance not cover IVF t hey did not cover any of the fertility specialist either. So we decided to go the adoption route which also was out of pocket. We agreed that our genes werent so superior that we had to make a baby in a test tube when there were so many kids out there needing homes. The last class we took as a requirement for adoption my ex-husband decided that not only did he not want to adopt, he was also done with the relationship. Obviously it was not meant to be and I am in the best place ever due to that decision and I have no regrets of any of it, I have an amazing 7-month old baby now and things worked out how they were supposed to. However, that struggle to me is all too real. I will never understand this being a benefit and a possibility and not infertility specialist, IVF, adoption, etc. I do know there are companies that exist that do have some of these benefits. Which is fantastic. However, the ones offering this benefit in my eyes it benefits only one person and that is the company. Th ey are offering to give women the opportunity to focus on their career rather than a family to benefit the company themselves. So they dont have to worry about maternity leave from top performers or women quitting and never coming back. I can understand the administrative perspective of this and I try to look at it with an open mind and without emotional thinking. However, I come back to the point that if they are so willing to help women extend their age of mom hood but not willing to assist in them becoming a mom in other ways then it really is not a benefit for women, especially the majority of women. If the DHHS mandates these benefits I think the impact on businesses would be significant. First, it is going to be very costly. The act of IVF alone is around $10,000 for one try and there are numerous couples who would take full advantage of this opportunity. The average cost of one IVF treatment in the United States is $12,400, and thats without the extra medicines the couple may need, according to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. Often, couples will need more than one treatment to conceive. (Christensen, 2014) If they take advantage of the opportunity the next step would be the amount of women able to get pregnant now that were not before, taking maternity leave and possibly even quitting the job field. The benefits to egg freezing however, would be very beneficial to a lot of companies. Especially for the women who are go-getter, company changing, innovative game changers for the companies. They would hate to put a stall in that or have them change or even worse, r esign for mother hood. I can tell you from personal experience that so far in my childs 7 months of life, my way of thinking is completely different. Not even just on an emotional or logical sense but in the way that my brain literally does not function the way it did before. I feel clouded, slow to speak instead of witty as I was before, distracted, exhausted, etc. My brain literally does not work as quick and I feel foggy at times as if I have dumbed down. I had heard the term pregnancy brain on and off again throughout my pregnancy but then found out that it really kicks in after you have had a baby and you are only getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night total for even the first 7 months. I learned though that this tends to wear off and go away after a year, and some of it sticks forever. With all of that said, women having babies in a position of power or innovation, could cause unanticipated negative effects for the company they work for. So I can understand wanting to put off moth erhood until your career is well established and thriving. There would also be an impact on the health care industry here. The cost of these procedures are high, but if the companies are paying for them to begin with it will cause a drive in the amount of people seeking theses services, therefore, supply and demand changes and maybe the cost of these services may eventually go down. We would also have more women having babies. doctors at these clinics performed 165,172 procedures, including IVF, with 61,740 babies born as a result of those efforts in 2012. (Christensen, 2014) The impact on federally mandated paid family leave, FMLA would be very expensive. People use FMLA every day. At any given time, 10.7% of the U.S. workforce is on FMLA leave. Thats right, according to FMLA Sources analysis, one in every 10 employees is taking FMLA leave right now. And thats the average in some industries the number is far greater. For example, in health care organizations and call centers, the number of people on FMLA leave at a given time is as much as 30%. (Schappel, 2015) If you put that in numbers, specifically the health care system it would ultimately go bankrupt and be nonexistent. It would change the way FMLA is given out in the healthcare industry as well. I think right now physicians are very lenient on signing FMLA paperwork because it has no detrimental effect on them in anyway. However, once it becomes a monetary thing, the companies could begin to look into suing physicians for giving FMLA when it is not needed. I think it will also cause a huge uproar for companies in the matter of having to payout FMLA for things that could have been prevented, i.e. type two diabetes, lung cancer from cigarettes, pregnancy, etc. This may cause companies and the health care industry to make prophylactic care even more of a priority than it already is. There are lot of ethics involved here for everyone in the party. I read an article written for NY times that points out a lot of valid arguments as to why it could be unethical to provide this benefit to women. First, stimulating womens ovaries and retrieving eggs is a two-week medical process that is not without medical risk. Offering or promoting it to women who may never need it should be done cautiously. Employers may have the best of intentions, but no woman should undergo a medical procedure without thorough, informed consent obtained through discussion with a genuinely objective medical professionalà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ there are other costs, including annual storage fees. these smart, young, fertile workers share a lot of characteristics with ideal egg donors. Ultimately, these unneeded eggs may end up on the market. And if you dont work for Apple or Facebook, want to preserve your fertility and need to find a way to pay for it, you might be offered an egg-sharing option. All of th is may be tempting for women, employers and doctors alike, but it raises serious ethical, informed consent and conflict of interest issues. (Crockin 2014) As she says, there are some serious risk in doing this, plus the outcomes really are not all that promising. So ethically you are putting women at higher risk doing this method with a promise of a baby later in life when realistically the chance is only at 30% that they become pregnant. So you are setting in a false hope into women who eventually want to parent, they count on you to provide these services so they can wait to be moms and then the time comes they choose to become a parent and their egg is no good or doesnt take any of the times and then they have no child after all. This can all be pinpointed back to the employer for enticing them to begin with. As a CEO I would seriously consider the want for this benefit, even if I disagree with it. Some of the things I would be looking at and considering are the percentage of women requesting it. If it is such a small amount of request that the impact wont hurt or help either way, I would deny the coverage and request a meeting explaining why I denied it as a coverage but offer up a savings plan in place that the company would be willing to match up to a certain percentage of the savings this way all employees would benefit from something rather than one expensive benefit given out to select few. If numerous women were interested in this process, I would figure out the cost to our company if 100% took advantage and make my decision from there. I would have to decide if it is detrimental to have in order to keep the women requesting this as well as if it would attract new employees who are also looking for this sort of benefit.   Overall, the benefit to me appears to be an overkill. There are numerous benefits out there that can be given that would help more people and be less expensive. If it is just to be innovative and make it on the news for the uniqueness that is for each company to decide. I just do not see much of a benefit here overall for employees and even the employers. What is the purpose for new employee orientation?   What are the essential components of an effective orientation program? What was the training and orientation you received in your most recent job?   What changes would you propose to your supervisors and how will you communicate these? If you were to design an orientation from scratch for your employer, what would you include? Why? New employee orientation is designed to help new employees develop a basic understanding and skill set of the company they were hired within. This covers everything from basic policies to individualized task and job description duties. 25 percent of companies admitted that their onboarding program does not include any form of training, which leads to a loss of 60 percent of a companys entire workforce. Without a substantial and effective training program in a new employee onboarding effort, disappointments will result relative to performance and other profit hindering factors. (Kime, 2015) The essential components of an effective orientation program according to Albert Brannen are; Compliance with government rules, information about the employers mission, core values and culture, information about the employers benefits, information about critical employer policies, introduction to other employees and to the employers facilities, thorough explanation about the new employees job dutie s, documentation of the entire orientation process. (Brannen, 2014). I am going to actually reference my job as a surgical technologist since my last job I was at for 3 years and although it had a great orientation program, it was not near as in depth as orientation for becoming a surgical technologist in Labor and Delivery. My initial orientation required that I go to an actual hospital wide orientation class for an entire week. The first day was all formalities, ID badges, tax forms, blank checks for direct deposit, benefit sign up, etc. The next 4 days were spent going over, in depth, hospital policies, blood borne pathogens, cpr certifications, harassment training, really boring osha required videos, emergency preparedness, HIPPA, etc. It was long and really awful but also the norm for any new clinical employee at the hospital. After my week of hospital orientation, I began what would be eight weeks of job specific orientation. I had a mentor that I was paired with for eight wee ks who taught me everything I would ever need to know as a surgical technologist in Labor and Delivery. He (the only male in our entire department) had been there for over 15 years. He was able to teach me things I would have never learned in school, the actual job itself and the best part, doctors preferences. The hardest part about being the right hand to a surgeon is that every single one of them were completely different. They would call the names of instruments whatever they wanted, they all used completely different suture, they wanted retractors held a different way, umbilical cords cut at different lengths, staples done different, etc. Those were all within my scope of practice as well as numerous other things, and every one of them wanted it done different. By then end of my eight weeks on orientation not only did I know how to do a C-section from start to finish in my sleep but I could also individualize each case depending on the doctors wants and needs and we had over 30 doctors including the current family practice residents (who never really knew what they wanted). The count of the instruments, the set-up of everything, each layer of tissue being cut into, what they were called and how to separate them (there are 5 layers before you get to the amniotic sac à ¯Ã‚ Ã…  ), when to pass the instruments and when to pass blood control without a doctor ever asking me for anything, I could retract without having to be repositioned, when baby was born I had cord clamps and scissors ready for me to cut the cord and then draw cord blood an automatic requirement and then immediately as baby is handed off to nurse I began to pass suture and begin blood control again all while calculating blood loss and maintain a sterile field. I could do all of this by eight weeks (obviously plus two years of school before hand) thanks to my orientation. By six months I worked nights and only did emergency C-sections. I had done everything from a prolapsed cord, which is in sane if you ever have time to research it, to hemorrhaging patients where we literally had to run to the O.R. and do whats called a splash and dash (iodine pour and cut) and I did it with confidence and without error. I could still perform a C-section sans doctor today if I ever had to. Its amazing what the surgical technologist are allowed to do within their scope of practice. My favorite was finally getting to do sutures and staples of the final close. It was thrilling to me and I would have never thrived as well without my eight weeks of orientation with someone by my side at all times. New employees who attended a well-structured onboarding orientation program, were 69 percent more likely to remain at a company up to three years. Losing an employee due to their experiences of being confused, feeling alienated, or lacking confidence is a sign of poor onboard programming (Kime, 2014) Some of the changes I would include in that orientation are important. First, I think I should hav e had orientation for at least on night shift, because it was an entire different ball game. It would have been nice to adjust to the differences before being released on my own. Second, I would have made sure to explain a solo C-section. Basically the surgeon has to have two surgical technologists to do the procedure. There is the right hand tech which is who I always was and then a tech across from myself and the doctor who is just there to help retract and maintain count and sterile fields. However, a lot of times (the reason I quit ultimately) I was alone on Friday nights. The only Surgical Technologist in our department. Which means for emergency C-sections (thank God we never had more than one at a time!) I had to train a nurse in a crash course of how to maintain a sterile field and retract. It is a simple concept but in an emergency you have a nurse who knows how to gown and glove but has never ever assisted on a C-section. I think it would have been really nice to go over a ll of this in orientation because everyone had to solo a C-section from time to time and knowing what key points to use to train I feel are crucial. I still feel like this is absolutely not okay from an administrative point of view, the risk is way to high throwing in a nurse who did not study sterile technique into a surgery they have never done, during an emergency. But, that is another topic that I will try not to disclose at this point. If I were to design an orientation program from scratch I would include all of what was already included in mine but also include night training, how to train and RN in a crash course, etc. I would also implement a surgeon training book, basically a book of all of the surgeons quirks, preferences, pet peeves, etc. into a pocket book to help reference to and learn in order to make a smoother surgery and a happy surgeon. Because, lets face it, if your surgeon hates you, your life is hell. God, I dont miss those days. I do miss the job itself though . Employers are finding it more difficult to support health insurance coverage as a benefit as it has become costlier than the tax savings for offering it.   Do you think employer-based health insurance on its way out under the affordable Care Act?   What are practical concerns if employers do not maintain this benefit to a healthcare organization?   What trends are there in the workplace in this region? What are employers doing to manage its health costs? Employer-Based health insurance is becoming more and more expensive. It is a lot more costly then it is to just pay the taxes Obama care actually requires. The employer mandate fee (officially called an Employer Shared Responsibility Payment) is a per-month, per-employee fee for employers who have more than 50 full-time equivalent employees and dont offer health coverage to the required amount of full-time employees (as well as their dependents up to age 26). The annual fee is $2,000 per employee if insurance isnt offered at all (the first 30 full-time employees are exempt). This helps lower the fee for smaller firms who are still required to pay the fee. Unlike employer contributions to employee premiums, the Employer Shared Responsibility Payment is not tax deductible. (Obamacarefacts, 2016) The company has to provide affordable insurance. Affordable means that a plan costs no more than 9.5% of employees household income for employee-only coverage. As a safe harbor, employers can s imply make sure the plan costs no more than 9.5% of employee-only income. (Obamacarefacts 2016) So since it is cheaper for a lot of companies to pay the fee instead of providing affordable insurance at no more than 9.5% of their employees household income, I can see how it could eventually work its way out of the system. However, companies that choose to not provide insurance will be the bottom on the list of places to apply looking ahead at total compensation plans it would really cut out of the total compensation provided. So I think if the company is smart they will not eliminate health insurance over all. The trends in our regions are kind of hard to determine because, Approximately 96 percent of employers are small businesses and have fewer than 50 FTE workers and are exempt from the employer responsibility provisions. (Obamacarefacts, 2016) Therefor they are not mandated to provide insurance anyhow and already have a system set in place for their policies in their workplaces. Since this has gone into effect a lot of companies have moved full time employees into part time positions to avoid having to provide insurance. It has caused a lot of people to lose finances, jobs, homes, etc all based upon the fact that employers had to cut hours and add in more part time workers in order to completely avoid the mandate altogether. Some of the things employers are doing to manage health cost are focusing on prophylactic care, or preventative health. They are providing routine screenings, competitions for weight loss programs, healthy lifestyle tips, healthy vending machines, etc. They are doing this in order to decrease health insurance use and ultimately cut down the cost of insurance premiums overall. Describe the concept of total compensation and components that make it up.   Why is it important?   How is it determined?   What impact does it have on recruitment and retention? Total compensation is not just the amount of money being paid but the total amount with benefits included being a total sum of all your compensation you are receiving to do the job. There are ten elements that comprise a typical compensation package. They are: Base Salary Annual/Quarterly Bonus Other bonus (Peer, boss, outstanding non-normal accomplishments) Stock options Stock units (Hurray!) 401k contribution (Pre-tax and Roth) Health Wellness (Medical, dental, vision, employee assistance program) Life Accident Insurance (Basic life, accidental death and dismemberment, long term disability, survivor income benefit) Other Insurance (Travel, legal) Perks (Food, internet services, gym memberships, cell phone and service, company bus/train/plane, massages, company discounts, electric car chargers, university/ongoing education funding, etc.) (Kaushik, 2014) Total compensation is important because it determines the value of the job as a whole when deciding upon a position or career place. Hourly wages and salary do not matter in total when deciding a job anymore, the benefits package makes a big difference on making final decisions these days. Total compensation, which includes wages and benefits, is most often thought of as the key element affecting an individuals decision to accept the position with an organization. (Fried, 2015) To determine total compensation you would add up your base pay with your benefits provided. Or according to Fried, Total compensation is the value of the employees base salary plus the value of the benefits package. An employer may help articulate this fact in several ways, including the following: Add a section on pay advices that notes the value of the employer-paid portion of health insurance. Provide benefits calculation tools on the company website or intranet. Produce customized benefits statements during the annual open enrollment process. Use social media to communicate benefits through a patient portal and/or interactive applications. Communication of the worth of these benefits is essential if an employer intends them to play a part in recruitment and retention. (Fried, 2015) Recruitment and retention are going to depend on this factor in order to draw in the right employees like the book says, you have to have something ready for them to visibly see the actual dollar amount of the benefits being offered in order to show the true value of what is being offered to them.
